Abstract

The rapid expansion of the digital economy has transformed the financial practices of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), while persistent financial vulnerabilities continue to constrain their capacity to withstand economic uncertainty and maintain business continuity. This study aims to explore how SMEs experience and utilize digital financial inclusion, how digital financial services contribute to financial resilience, how entrepreneurs employ digital finance to manage financial risks, and what barriers constrain its effective utilization. The study employed a qualitative multiple-case study involving SMEs in East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, business documentation, digital transaction records, and relevant policy documents involving SME owners, managers, financial administrators, and other relevant informants. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification, while credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation, member checking, peer debriefing, and an audit trail. The findings demonstrate that digital financial inclusion contributes to SME financial resilience through a progressive mechanism involving digital financial access, digital utilization, financial capability, and risk management. Digital financial services improve transaction accessibility, financial information visibility, cash-flow monitoring, and adaptive decision-making. Nevertheless, limited digital literacy, financial knowledge, cybersecurity concerns, technological infrastructure, transaction costs, and limited trust constrain effective utilization. The study contributes a capability-oriented model explaining how digital financial inclusion is transformed into financial resilience and business continuity.
