Contemporary education is increasingly shaped by instrumental rationality, emphasizing competencies, productivity, employability, measurable performance, and adaptation to labor-market demands. While these orientations contribute to educational efficiency and social responsiveness, they raise a fundamental philosophical question concerning the ultimate purpose of education: should education primarily produce capable and productive individuals, or should it cultivate human beings capable of living meaningful and flourishing lives? This article aims to reconstruct the philosophy of education by positioning human flourishing as a normative horizon beyond instrumental educational purposes. Employing a conceptual-philosophical approach, the study uses conceptual analysis, philosophical reconstruction, critical interpretation, and comparative philosophical synthesis to examine instrumental rationality, human formation, human dignity, virtue, agency, meaning, and flourishing. The analysis demonstrates that competency formation alone provides an insufficient account of educational purpose because competence does not necessarily entail moral judgment, responsible agency, meaningful relationships, social responsibility, or a coherent conception of the good life. The study consequently proposes a Flourishing-Oriented Educational Philosophy that integrates knowledge, character, agency, meaning, and flourishing as interconnected dimensions of human formation. The framework repositions competencies as important means rather than ultimate educational ends and emphasizes education’s intellectual, moral, relational, existential, and normative dimensions. The study contributes a philosophical foundation for rethinking educational purpose and offers implications for curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, teacher roles, and institutional policy oriented toward holistic human development.
