Collaborative Stakeholder Governance in Pesantren Education: Community Participation, Institutional Accountability, and Sustainable Development

Abstract

Pesantren represent distinctive Islamic educational institutions whose sustainability depends not only on internal managerial capacity but also on the quality of relationships among institutional leaders, teachers, parents, alumni, administrators, and surrounding communities. This study examines stakeholder governance in pesantren education by focusing on community participation, institutional accountability, participatory decision-making, collaborative governance, and sustainable institutional development. A qualitative case study approach was employed to explore stakeholder involvement and governance processes within a pesantren educational setting. Data were conceptually examined through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, observation, document analysis, stakeholder mapping, thematic analysis, and triangulation. The findings indicate that stakeholder participation operates through a relational governance structure in which kyai leadership remains central while teachers, parents, alumni, administrators, and community representatives contribute knowledge, feedback, resources, and social legitimacy. Participatory governance strengthens decision-making by integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives, while transparency, responsiveness, evaluation, and distributed responsibility reinforce institutional accountability. Collaborative governance further transforms stakeholder relationships into institutional resources through alumni networks, community partnerships, knowledge exchange, and resource mobilization. The study proposes a Collaborative Stakeholder Governance Model for Sustainable Pesantren Education that connects stakeholder participation, shared dialogue, participatory decision-making, institutional accountability, trust and legitimacy, collaborative governance, and sustainable educational outcomes. The model contributes to educational management scholarship by positioning stakeholder engagement as a central governance mechanism for strengthening institutional resilience, educational quality, community development, and long-term sustainability within pesantren.
